How To Study

First let me say that we are commanded to STUDY the Bible  the WORD of God.

II TIMOTHY 2:15

The first thing a person should do in STUDYING the Bible is to PRAY that God will open up their understanding and to give them knowledge about HIS WORD the BIBLE.

II Peter 3:18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, to him be glory both now and for ever. A-men.

Some tools to have as you STUDY the Bible:

  1. Bible Dictionary
  2. Concordance
  3. Layman’s English Greek Concordance
  4. Old Testament and New testament Word Study
  5. Commentary of the Bible
  6. Book on Bible Customs
  7. Book on Bible Lands

______________________________

You should learn the BOOKS of the Bible by memory.

______________________________

HOW TO STUDY THE Bible

  1. Pray first.
  2. Ask yourself these five things.

B. who is speaking?

C. To whom or about whom is he speaking or writing?

D. When or about what time is he speaking or writing?

E. What is the occasion for the speaking or writing?

  1. Read slowly to notice each word.
  2. Take notes.
  3. When you come across a word you do not know the meaning of, look up the meaning of the word.
  4. When you come across a proper name look up the meaning of the name.
  5. Compare verses with other verses on the same subject.
  6. Compare like chapters.
  7. When studying objects look up all the verses that cover that subject.
  8. Always accept what the bible says literally as it, unless there is a figure of speech involved that requires a figurative application of the subject.
  9. When studying subjects it is good to find what is called, (FIRST MENTION) when the subject was first mention in the Bible.
  10. Know the parts of speech of the words in a verse: verb, adverb, noun, pronoun, adjective, preposition, etc.

Dr. Albert Garner says in this book, Bible Analysis on page 21.

It is my personal opinion that if God's children would feed upon God's Word more, a great many of them could “Let up” on taking so many vitamin pills and nerve calls.

The Bible is the only book that reveals God to be its Author, Jesus to be its Theme, and the salvation of lost men to be its purpose.

HOW TO STUDY THE BIBLE

Dr. Wilbur M. Smith relates seven great things that the study of the Bible will do for us:

  1. The Bible discovers and convicts us of sin.
  2. The Bible helps cleanse us from the pollutions of sin.
  3. The Bible imparts strength.
  4. The Bible instructs us in what we are to do.
  5. The Bible provides us with a sword for victory over sin.
  6. The Bible makes our lives fruitful.
  7. The Bible gives power to pray.

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of thoughts and intents of the heart.

Psalm 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

Psalm 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
